Karl Turner has today opened a new cash and carry that will bring an extra 25 jobs into the city.
The Grimsby-based Ramsden Group announced in November that it was to open a new depot in Hull under their Dee Bee brand, one of the best known brands in the UK wholesaling sector and which is returning to Hull after an absence of more than 25 years.
The depot will eventually create more than 35 full and part-time jobs and will be a mirror of the Dee Bee unit and business model in Grimsby, which has served customers across North East Lincolnshire for 54 years.
The Group’s human resources manager, Lisa Flear, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that so many people expressed an interest in joining us in our new Hull venture. No sooner had the opportunities been posted we started to be inundated with applications.”
Group managing director, Nick Ramsden, said Hull was an exciting expansion for the Dee Bee business, a move that also comes with some nostalgia as Ramsdens owned and operated a Dee Bee cash and carry on the Leads Road site 25 years ago.
He added: “We are delighted to be returning to the city where we have many friends and customers.”
The Leads Road store provides 70,000 sq. ft. of space and will hold around 6,000 different products, including alcohol, confectionery, soft drinks, snacks, grocery and catering. It will supply independent retailers, food service outlets, pubs and clubs and will be open to the trade.
Dee Bee currently services around 40 convenience stores and pubs in Hull, representing 10 per cent of the current turnover, but Nick Ramsden said the company was confident that this will rise significantly in the first year of operation.
He added: “Hull has one of the highest number of convenience stores per capita in the UK and there is no sign of this trend declining. By opening a new cash and carry, we are taking our business closer to our customers, providing faster, more efficient access to their purchasing needs.”
Karl Turner, Labour MP for East Hull said “I am delighted to have been asked to open the new DeeBee cash and carry in East Hull.
“This is another jewel in the crown for jobs in East Hull and has created much needed investment in our part of the city. I look forward to seeing the cash and carry go from strength to strength, serving the wholesale needs of businesses in Hull and the surrounding area.”
