The events that happened in Bristol over the weekend show that History should never just be let to sit in the form of statues.

It is abhorrent that the statue of Edward Colston was still left standing until the weekend, it is not good enough to have those people who contributed to the slave trade still be left standing high above our cities across the country.

In Hull we should be proud of our statues and the focus of that celebration being on one of my predecessors William Wilberforce who was the Member of Parliament for Hull and part of our countries effort to abolish the slave trade.

This city has always celebrated him with the annual freedom festival and the Wilberforce museum which sits in the heart of our city.

We should always look to learn from our past, not just to see what was done then but how we learn and reflect on what we can do in the here and now.
