Karl has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Kingston-upon-Hull East (East Hull) since 2010, when his predecessor John Prescott stood down.

Karl was born and bred in East Hull, and is the first MP born and raised in the area to represent the constituency in Parliament since William Wilberforce.

After leaving Bransholme High School Karl worked in local government and as a self-employed antiques dealer, before returning to education and taking A-Levels, then completing a Law Degree (LLB) in 2004 from the University of Hull. As a Barrister he specialised in criminal law.

With his politics shaped by his trade unionist parents, Karl is committed to improving the lives of low-income families, access to high-quality education for all, and tackling crime and justice issues. He is an active trade unionist and is a member of Unite, the GMB and Unison.

Alongside working on constituency issues, Karl has held several shadow ministerial positions and in the Shadow Cabinet including Shadow Solicitor General, Shadow Attorney General, Shadow Minister for Shipping, Aviation and Roads and Shadow Minister for Legal Aid.

Karl lives in East Hull with his wife and daughter.
