I am very pleased to see P&O’s announcement that they have offered to transport 40 million doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine to the UK for free.

I wrote to the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps in November to highlight the critical importance of the Hull-Zeebrugge freight route for vaccine supply between Pfizer’s Belgian factory and hard-hit areas in the North of England.

After weeks of discussions between myself and the Secretary of State, this is an important step from P&O. I have had strong differences with the company in recent months and years, especially over job losses, but this is undoubtedly a helpful gesture.
