The full results of my survey on local bus services can now be revealed and they show clear anger and dissatisfaction over rising fares and poor levels of service.

With many families in East Hull already suffering from the cost-of-living crisis, and widespread predictions of worse to come, nearly three quarters of respondents thought that bus fares should be cheaper.

Many people expressed their desire to use the bus more regularly, and to swap more car journeys for public transport, but felt they were unable to rely on their local bus service. Over 90 percent of respondents had experienced a scheduled bus simply not turning up. This has had a devastating impact on those who are, for one reason or another, unable to drive, and are therefore dependant on their local bus to access services, attend important appointments, and prevent isolation.

Furthermore, the punctuality of bus services further threatens their reliability, with nearly 60 percent of respondents believing that bus punctuality has got worse over the last year.

In addition to the many individual testimonies of frustration and disappointment from passengers I have received, my survey also found that nearly 90 percent of people felt that bus companies serving East Hull, do not do enough to keep passengers well informed, with many pointing out that the information at individual bus stops is either inaccurate or non-existent.

These results show the depth of dissatisfaction with bus services across East Hull. The high prices faced by bus passengers are adding to the squeeze they are facing in their household budgets because this government chose to cut taxes and raise spending too far and too fast.

People in East Hull are clear: they are paying too high a price and receiving too poor a service but those who are reliant on buses have no choice but to carry on paying increasing fares.

I hope that Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses will agree to meet with me and listen to the views of their customers and take immediate action to improve their services.
