East Hull MP Karl Turner held a debate in Parliament this morning to press the Government on the need for an end to the delays which have hampered the coordination of MND research since the initial pledge of £50m over five years in 2021.

The Health Secretary promised at the weekend to ‘fast track’ the funding following avid pressure from campaigners, and Mr Turner securing today’s debate, and rugby league legend Rob Burrow’s warning against further delays.

While he welcomed Steve Barclay’s comments, Mr Turner also highlighted that the campaigners who had harried the Government into promising the funding still had outstanding questions on how exactly it would be accessed and delivered, and would value a meeting with DHSC and BEIS Ministers to discuss how that could be achieved.

Speaking after the debate, Karl Turner said:

“People across the country, and rugby league fans in particular, are full of admiration for the way Rob Burrow has dragged the need for more investment into MND research onto the Government’s agenda.

While we welcome their promises and warm words, now is the time to step up and deliver. There is the potential for phenomenal breakthroughs to be made, but six people are dying every single day in the UK from MND, so the Government cannot afford to delay any longer.”
